    Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Gateway

    Our middle school science program continues to integrate Project Lead the Way—Gateway (PLTW) into our curriculum. PLTW is a nationally recognized Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program that emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning. This program will spark interest in STEM subjects, while allowing students to gain knowledge and acquire skills in problem solving, teamwork and innovation.

We are one of 176 schools across the United States to receive this recognition! We are delighted to be awarded this honor for the second year in a row and look forward to continuing our state-of-the-art programing as we move into 2020-21!


    Design & Modeling Unit

    Our Design & Modeling unit allows students to visualize, design, and test their ideas using Autodesk Inventor software. HA students take the Design and Modeling Unit over three years in order to experience the Design Process, practice measurements, and properly sketch and dimension their own designs. Students end the unit each year by completing major CAD projects. These projects include designing a letter statue, hair brush, switch plate, furniture, trophy, watch, and pegboard toy. Our students even complete a cross-curricular project with Art by creating a prototype of their switch plate and furniture designs.

    Automation & Robotics

    The Automation & Robotics unit has our middle school students studying mechanical and computer control systems, including robotics and animation. Students begin this unit by researching robots and how they function. In order to understand mechanical systems, students create mechanisms using VEX Robotics equipment. This work lays the foundation for students to successfully design, model, and test their very own pull toy. Finally, middle school students use the VEX Robotics and RobotC software to successfully design, model, and test everyday objects such as a dragster, tollbooth, bridge and spinning sign.

    Green Architecture

    In this unit, students learn how to apply this concept to the fields of architecture and construction by exploring dimensioning, measuring, and architectural sustainability as they design affordable housing units using Autodesk’s® 3D architectural design software. 

    Energy in the Environment

    The Energy in the Environment unit allows the students to design and model alternative energy sources and evaluate options for reducing energy consumption, including designing and building windmills and a penguin dwelling. Students will learn about the different types and forms of energy and how to properly apply the Law of Conservation of Energy.

    Magic of Electrons

    Through hands-on projects, students explore electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. They learn knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design, and examine the impact of electricity on the world around them.

    Science of Technology

    Students apply the concepts of chemistry and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects in order to better understand the responsibilities of a chemist and chemical engineer. Students explore the chemistry behind making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nanomaterials. While studying physics, students work with the six simple machines and discover how they are used to create motion by creating their very own working Rube Goldberg.

    Medical Detectives

    Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, dissect a sheep brain, investigate disease outbreaks, and explore how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction.
